1947 Champion 1J

4.2 Horsepower outboard motor

Bendix/Scintilla Magneto repair.

Here we will look at the overall condition of a restoration project before and after cleaning.
I will then add pictures after it has been repainted as well.
The Champion 1J 1947 outboard motor

flywheel is easily removed by starting with the 3/4" nut
and

and lock washer from the crankshaft end.

Next, I had to adapt my gear puller, as shown, to pull the flywheel

and expose the bendix/scintilla magneto assembly.

Next

I remove the gas tank from the engine by turning slightly while lifting the tank off.

Now we have easy access to the Bendix/Scintilla magneto plate and coil assembly.
The coil isn't difficult to replace and is still available from various sources. I do not carry the parts, howver.

I will add more information as I dig farther into this project.
