Here we will look at the overall condition of a restoration project before and after cleaning.
I will then add pictures after it has been repainted as well. The tank midsection
and are all pretty dusty, cobwebbed, and greasy. Now, I will start by sparaying some penetrating oil to the three top/recoil assembly screws.
as well as the side covers or lower cowls.
To expose the top and sides of the motor.
Revealing a dusty, cobwebbed, greasy motor block or crankcase. NEXT, removing the three top/recoil assembly screws.
Allows access to the flywheel
BEFORE removing the flywheel, I will remove the gas tank and clean it.
starting by locating the 4 (four) 7/16" bolts. The 7/16" gasline to gas valve can be loosened now as well.
With the tank off, we have easy access to the flywheel.
We can now use the HARMONIC BALANCER PULLER TOOL to remove the flywheel and exposing the magneto plate, coil, and points. in the center of the photo which can be cleaned and set with the screw on the left in this photo.
NEXT, I removed the carbs two 7/16" retaining bolts. and the gasline to carb, which on this motor was an incorrect fitting. pulling back on the carb gently will now remove the carb from the engine.
which we can now inspect, and discover on this model a "junk" carb that has been
coated with sealer and an improper fitting. NOW I remove the magneto from the engine block.
starting with the flathead tension screw. and spark plug wire retainer.
on top of the engine block/crankcase. Now we can lift the magneto plate (mag plate) off of the engine.
If you desire to remove the crankcase/block from the lower unit. we remove the 6 (six) 7/16" bolts from the underside of the block. and slide the motor up. Replacing the impeller on a Firestone motor 10-A-72 (5011)
