Next, removal of the mag plate is started by gently prying upward on the huge centrally located magnet with a flathead screwdriver.
DO NOT APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BAKELITE COILS OR YOU WILL DAMAGE THEM!


NEXT, locate the mag plate retaining screw and loosen it to allow...

the mag plate to lift, but do not remove the plate yet.

If you haven't already done so, remove the plug wires as well as the screw shown in the left of center in this picture.
This is the screw that holds the spark plug wires to the motor.
BE SURE YOU KNOW WHICH WIRE IS THE TOP.
It saves for hassles later on.


NEXT... remove the carb linkage to the flywheel which is retained by a small piece of wire (usually).
then...

lift the mag plate off of the engine and


inspect the coils for any damage, cracks, dirt, etc. This mag plate is very greasy.

but the coils, condensors and points are in excellent shape, just oily.
