Johnson HD-25 Gas Tank Removal and cleaning.

either with or without removal of recoil assembly.

starts by removing the 4 (four) 7/16" bolts from the underside of the tank located as shown.


you can loosen the 7/16" nut retaining the gasline to the gas valve at this point as well.





then remove the 3/8" nut from the carb primer.
The tank can easily be lifted, turnig it clockwise while lifting to allow the gas valve to be lifted out as well.
Next we can clean the gas tank easily.
There are a few things we can use.
I like using LA's Totally Awesome, though any orange type or simply green cleaners can be used.
I get a 20 ounce bottle of LA Totally Awesome and pour it into the tank with the gas valve in place and shut off.
I swish it around in the tank to coat the inside then let the tank sit for a few hours to even a day or two.
I often reuse the cleaner for multiple jobs, but it isn't necessary to keep the old cleaner.
After a few hours to a day, you can rinse the tank out with plenty of water.
This next step i do with or without the other cleaner.
I use a cup of aquarium gravel, though you could use bb's also, poured into the gas tank cap opening.
I then shake this vigourously, with the cap in place, to break up and scrape clean any stubborn crud in the tank.
After doing this for several minutes, you can empty the tank and rinse again.
Now, open the gas valve to make sure you are getting flow through it.
If water doesn't flow freely past the gas valve, you will likely need to remove the gas valve. a 1/2" crescent wrench is in order here.
Remove the valve and flush it with water, open all the 7/16" nuts for the top and bottom and shut off valve and run some fine wire through the valve to make sure it is cleaned. If the old wire mesh screen is still in place, poke a wire from the other hole up to the mesh to clean out the stop valve.
After rinsing, you could blow air into it to be sure it's working.
Reinstall the valve and dry the tank thoroughly and you're ready to reinstall the tank and fill up the tank with frsh gas for your outting.
