Here we will look at the overall condition of the lower unit parts including the impeller and gears on this 1946 - 1947 Hiawatha 5 horsepower
Gale motors product. This section will show you how to disassemble the lower unit as well as the
correct order of the lower unit parts.
Prop removal, after cotter pin and prop nut have been removed. reveal the inner prop hub with
the rubber shock absorber and washer under the rubber.
The shear pin is removed next to allow access to the lower unit gear housing and impeller housing covers.
Now removal of the impeller housing by using an impact screwdriver on the flathead screws.
The impeller housing indicates some dirt and sand have been in here wearing the surface some.
The pump or impeller and inside the housing are scraped up from dirt as well.
Next, removal of the eccentric by gently pulling on it moving it off the shaft.
It may help to rub some 1000 to 2000 grit very fine sandpaper over the shaft to smooth it down a little.
Don't lose the eccentric pin, it's very small and easy to lose.
Now removing the impeller housing will expose the gears inside the gear housing so you can inspect and clean this messy area up.
