Checking For Spark
TN Model is shown, but procedure is same for most older outboards.
Determining if there is spark on your old outboard is an easy task. I remove the sparkplugs

starting by removing the spark plug caps with pliers.
this is necessary on TD/TN motors with original type of spark plug wires.
many motors have replaced wires with new cap covers that snap over the plug tops.

An extension and 13/16" socket

are required to remove the top spark plug.

Grounding the sparkplugs to the motor

allows you to check them for spark.

Turning the flywheel

by hand will be easy with the spark plugs removed.
Turning the flywheel while observing the spark plug ends for a blue spark will tell you if your ignition is working properly or not.

If one or both plugs do not "snap" and no spark is seen, checking the coils and cleaning the points is our next step to rule out.
